Week 3

Corruption and power are just two words that really sums up this week for me. As I read the overview and watch the video first thing I wanna touch on is about the Pullman Strike. George Pullman, he’s the inventor of the sleeper car for the luxurious rich and middle class. Pullman later named a town after himself where his factory was located. Pullman like to be in control of everything and in my opinion abused his power. He was very hungry for more money so he reduced the wage but kept rent the same, leading to some controversy. The worker formed a strike but it was a wild strike the workers were not a part of an union. Now mind you these workers were not skilled workers, and around the big union was ran mostly by big business owners called the AFL. Yet there was one union that would help but they was a small ball team, but that didn’t stop anything as Eugene Debs was gonna lead this strike. Now this was a strike for negotiation purposes only but Pullman didn’t wanna hear that. Pullman hit up the man Grover Cleveland and Grover cleaning up the streets of many cities from strikers. Grover finally end up taking this problem to federal court but Eugene Debs didn’t care continuing to fight which led to him going to jail. Now in court which caught me by surprise shows that money talks. The fighting strategy they used to stop the strike was the Sherman Anti-Trust act. This act is used to stop overpowering businesses like monopolies for fair competition. Yet in court they flipped it and made it seem like the UNSKILLED WORKERS were forming an union monopoly to take over the legitimate businesses. The government chose big money businesses over what’s morally right. It crazy because there was 56 million in damages, 30 deaths, and 50 or 60 real people critically injured just to negotiate better wage standards. Also its really sad because they never got to get what they wanted so it was just a waste almost.
Now I wanna hit on the overview. The overview was about “Mark Twain called the late 19th century the "Gilded Age." To me what this means is how people boost this way of life that they have great morals yet choose a dollars sign over doing morally right thing any day. Just take a minute to think about how people have illegal immigrants working for dirt cheap because it saves them money. Don’t forget this illegal immigrants can’t join an union. It just so sad that people sleep at night knowing all this information about how corrupted our country is. I can’t say anything about it being racist because its like being rich is its own race. Just take the Pullman strike for example white people under cutting their own people. Even though with money a lot of great things came our way. For instance with money it will create more opportunities for jobs, entertainment, school, neighborhoods, and etc. in my view I just see it as an distraction to keep the general population from trying fight the unjust. Along as you making money some people not gonna wanna do anything about it or they can’t because they got families that need them. I my reflection on week 3 is just crazy how people who have the power to change don’t do anything.

Week 2 Reflection on the south

My reflection on week two is dreadful, I have a lot of emotions towards this topic. From watching the video and reading the passages I see the ways that people go to take down another race making the American assumption to be very hard to believe. William T Sherman’s march lead 60,000 soldiers 285-miles from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia (Biography.com). Sherman’s March to the Sea frighten Georgia’s civilian’s into abandoning the Confederate cause. The soldiers did not destroy any of the towns in their path, but they did steal food and livestock and burned the houses and barns of people who tried to fight back (Biography.com). After all that the negro slaves was promised some type of land. But in the passage titled “Overview of Reconstruction” it leads me to my point stated previously. Reason being in the passage it says “Immediately following the war, all-white Southern legislatures passed black codes which denied blacks the right to purchase or rent land.” (Digital History).

Then the rise of the Jim Crow Law another sick way to make black people in those southern states suffer. The Jim Crow law started in 1965 and was adopted by 36 states in the US (history.com). The laws separated the colored from whites known as segregation. Around this time black people couldn’t eat, drink, talk, sit, or really even look at white person without outrageous punishment. As may of seem like a good deal of course colored people got the shitty end of the deal. The textbooks and bathrooms etc were horrible, in other words they treated the black people in that time era like the most hated disgusting animals.

Making thing worst a terrorist group called the kkk reigning their terror on the black community. The kkk started in 1865, the group stood for the rebel against anything or anyone that wasn’t agreeing with the white power supremacist. The kkk shock the streets making it hard for people to live. The group plus the American Nazi party took violent actions towards the CWP. Death to the Klan march, organized by the CWP. This event had been preceded by inflammatory rhetoric from both sides. The CWP had originally came to Greensboro to support the workers' rights activism among mostly black industry workers in the area (Assael, Shaun, et al). The march was a part of that larger effort. The Greensboro city police department had an informant within the KKK and ANP group who notified them that the Klan was prepared for armed violence (Assael, Shaun, et al). This was sad incident was known as the Greensboro Massacre leaving four men dead and several black people dead and injured. People work so hard throughout that time fighting constantly to be successful yet we still get the bad end of the stick. Just reflecting that people are really capable of doing theses sad horrific things to another race making the American Assumptions very hard to believe. Don’t get me wrong hard work pay off, but that success will be personal. The success that needed is for the colored community not just black but every race to be successfully given a chance to make it and not be profiled and judged.

Introductions

Introduction to My Life

-->
What’s up everybody, my name is Ivan Snipes and I’m the first boy in my family to go to college. In high school I was an A/B student four year varsity  football player and wrestler. Now I’m a freshman majoring in marketing and minoring in sports management. I’m from Brooklyn, New York but then some years later I moved to Atlanta, Georgia. My parents are also from Brooklyn, New York where they spent most of their lives. My dad never went to college but certifications in a lot of mechanical working. My mom did not finish college for money issues forcing her to drop out and get a job.
Brooklyn, New York

I chose to major in marketing because I just feel its a big talent of mine. Also I can use for my passion.
I have a big passion in cars with my major I can expose it way more and try to convert large crowds to gain that love that I have for cars. Furthermore I don’t wanna feel like work is work. I want my job to be something love so I won’t feel like work is work and be miserable. I wanna be happy to wake up in the morning and say this what I really wanna do.

                                                                            Graffiti/JDM

One of my favorite things to do on my free time is graffiti and race JDM cars. I started doing graffiti when I was 10 on Coney Island beach in New York with a friend. I didn’t get good until I hit 13 or 14, I remember my people telling me they can see the difference in my work. But before all that my love for JDM cars started with my dad around like seven. My dad owned a lot of them and taught me how to drive them. I raced for the first time at 17, funny thing is I just got my permit on that same exact day.

Porsche Atlanta

My dream job is to work at Porsche on their marketing team later retiring at Porsche. I always wanted to work with cars since I seen my father doing it. Lucky me when I moved to Atlanta I road passed it one day and I just knew I need to be there.
My  career goals that I have set for are:
1.     Junior year intern at summit and Atlanta motor speedway
2.     Do a training program for Phoenix marketing team in Atlanta
3.     Apply for an internship at Porsche Atlanta
4.     Work for a smaller car company in Georgia for more resume
5.     Finally apply for my dream job

I chose this class because I love history. When I was younger I loved watching the history channel with my grandma. She told about how life was when she was younger, all of her old stories were so amusing, interesting, and sad. In all my years in school social studies and history have my most outstanding grades and scores. I really excited to see what’s in store for this semester in this course.
